PostList is a utility for sending an identical mail message to all members on a mailing list. No member on this mailing list will know who the other members are. This is useful for anyone who needs to send mass mail to an audience, such as advertisers, or mailing list and newsletter maintainers.
Install PostList by running SETUP.EXE. This will install PostList in your Program Files/Accessories directory. It will also create a PostList mass mailer group in your Start Menu.
If the installation fails, simply copy POSTLIST.EXE to any directory as you see fit.
Open PostList via the PostList mass mailer program group in the Start Menu. Choose the File menu, and Configuration. This dialogue contains the following settings which must be entered. Press OK when they are complete.
Value | Example | Meaning |
---|---|---|
Mail server | mail.inter.net | The mail server which will accept your mail. Typically it is called 'mail'. |
To | Your mailing list | The name of the mailing list |
From | yourname@inter.net | Your email address, or a name like 'Sales Manager' |
Reply to | yourname@inter.net | The email address that recipients can send replies to |
Subject | Latest releases | The subject for the mail messages |
There is also a Trace logging option. This is useful for resolving problems. It is not needed for normal use. Make use of this facility for any technical support issues.
PostList uses mailing lists which are text files with one email address per line. Choose the file by pressing the Select mailing list file button. Its path will appear in the Mailing list file section.
To modify this mailing list, choose Modify email addresses in the Mailing list menu. Notepad or a different editor should open the mailing list. Make sure any changes are saved before closing the editor!
Now type the message you wish to send in the Mail message area. The Mail message menu includes options for loading and saving this message to a file if that is preferable.
To send the message, choose Send message now. PostList will inform you of any errors, or when it's finished. If a problem occurred, or you close PostList before it finishes, the next time you send messages it will give you the option to resume from where it left off.
